DEEP SEA DRILLING TECHNIQUES

Cel

The aim of this project was to improve the drilling water depth.
Re-entry sonar
The re-entry sonar makes it possible to seek out the wellhead on the sea bottom when the ship has no method of accurate location on the surface. A re-entry sonar has been developed and demonstration trials performed.
3,000 m drilling support
Study of a conventional vessel capable of making drillings in 3,000 m water depth was completed end 1980. This vessel will be equipped with dynamic positioning and a derrick with hoisting capacity of 900 t, tensioning devices and heave compensator. The study file drawn up will provide a starting point for study of the naval architecture of such a vessel.
Dynamic positioning.

Integration of a doppler sonar into the dynamic positioning system, together with improvement to the long-base acoustic positioning system, gave rise to successful trials in november 1979. Riser.

Work carried out covered the main factors that are essential to future drilling operations in very deep waters, namely:

- behaviour of the riser under the action of the longitudinal vibrations encountered at depths of over 1,500 m.
- architecture of the riser and its tensioning devices
- decreasing the weight of the riser by using suitable buoyancy materials and building it in new materials such as titanium: fatigue tests were performed successfully on the main parts of a prototype titanium riser but the implementation of this technique is limited by the high cost of titanium: a rapid-actuation connector with rotary rings was designed for this titanium riser.80 connectors derived from this first connector, for installation on an 18" steel riser, were built. These enabled a1 700 m prototype riser to be built in a very short time, thus permitting glp 1 and 2 wells to be successfully drilled in the mediterranean in depths of water of 1 714 and 1 250 m respectively in 1983
- improvement to the riser foot pup joint, by adding a rod joint sensor and a gas detector. Unfortunately, there was no opportunity to test this equipment in the deep mediterranean tests.
