Objective The objective of this research programme has been to develop an efficient method for the accurate prediction of structural response and collapse load of concrete cylindrical shells under deep sea loading. The results of this research were to be used to develop safe and economic design methods, thereby enhancing the potential of concrete structures for the exploitation and storage of offshore hydrocarbons. From the literature survey, an empirical design method was developed which was schown to provide a lower bound to almost all the available test results. The project examines the effects of potentially significant parameters on implosion in an effort to improve the existing knowledge and reduce the areas of uncertainty which at present require the imposition of large factors.
