HEAVY OIL PLATFORMS : FEASIBILITY STUDY

Objective

The overall objective of the project was to study preprocessing of heavy oils at the field, thus enabling them to be conveyed by pipeline over great distances, by lowering their viscosity.
To attain this objective, consideration was given to building an experimental platform comprising the following units: desalination, atmospheric distillation, vacuum distillation, de-asphalting, visbreaking, hydro-visbreaking, a variety of hydroprocessing operations, distillation of the products, storage utilities.
The specific aim of this project was to demonstrate the feasibility of such an experimental platform and to provide the basic engineering.
The files established during this project formed the starting point for the work performed subsequently under contract TH-05030-81-FR.
The project consisted of the following two phases:
1) feasibility study to define the specifications for the units, to study The characteristics of a number of heavy oils and to compare certain Process sequences and the operation of the platform units.
- draughting of the installation layout drawings.
- drafting of the 7 process files.
- execution of an experimental programme for support concerning
Implementation, processing methods and methods of analysing the Heavy oils. In this context, 6 heavy oils were studies in particular: Boscan, laguna once, tia juana heavy, athabasca, cold lake and north Battelford.
2) execution of the basic engineering, comprising a cost estimate and Request for tender for the main equipment.
