SOLAR ENERGY AND TOURIST TRADE IN CAPE CORSICA

Cel

In the tourist area of Cape Corsica a program for the lighting of historical monuments and urban areas was launched. The aim of this project was to demonstrate that the pv solution is well adapted to those needs.
The installations are in operation, the users are very satisfied.
Main problems encountered were:
- delays because authorizations arrived too late,
- insufficient resistance to storms ans salt agression of masts and racks, (e.g. the 990 Wp system Rogliano was completely renovated after a storm of 200 km/h),
- thefts and vandalism (one 450 Wp system vandalized, another one stolen, batteries of lamp posts stolen).
- financing (the users do not pay their part); maintenance for the systems is insufficient.
Despite of the problems met during the implementation and the monitoring of this project, this experience has enabled the contractor to check the good operation of the installed systems and to improve the reliability of some components. More experience in complete project management, including training and maintenance has been acquired.
Ten different communities are concerned: Murato, Olmeta du Cap; Ogliastro; Nonza: Rogliano: Cagnano; Morsiglia; Pino: Luri: Meria.
The following equipment is installed :
10 sign lamp posts (45 Wp); 52 street lights (90 Wp);
1 lighting of castle (990 Wp);
7 lightings of towers (6 x 450 Wp + 1 X 630 Wp);
14 lightings (entrance of Murato) (45 Wp);
16 lightings of jetties (90 Wp).
The systems are of modular type :
- lamp systems (module(s), mast, battery, regulator and timer, converter, lamp housing, bulb (11, 18 or 26 W) with small pv-power (45 or 90 Wp). The lamps have a novel control card which switches them on and off using the output of their own pv module.
- spot light systems (modules, battery, regulator and timer, inverter, light intensity switch, spot lights (70, 100 or 250 W) with intermediate pv-power (450 to 990 Wp).
Nr. subsystems : 100

Load descript. : Low power systems (lamps): low pressure sodium vapour lamps (PLS 11 W or SOX 18 W or SOX 26 W), fed by 18 kHz dc/ac inverters. Medium power systems: Inverter VICTRON,
24 dc/220 ac, 600 VA or 1200 VA or CONVERSOL, 12 dc/220 ac, 1000 VA, feeding high pressure sodium bulbs (SON 70, 100 or 250 W) or tubes (SNF 100 or 250) of PHILIPS), with light intensity switch LUCIREX. Monitoring : On two sites: Tower spotlight 450 W : irradiance (integrating pyranometer, power produced by pv-modules, dc current from battery, operating hours of the spot lights. Street lamp 90 W: power porduced by pv-modules, dc current from battery, operating hours of the lamp. Global monitoring for two sites has been made for two years (Aug.90 to Dec.92). The final global monitoring report is available.
