FORESTRY BIOMASS DEMONSTRATION PROJECT

Objective

The objective of the project was to demonstrate the feasibility of energy production from renewable forestry biomass. The concept of "short rotation forestry" was introduced during the 70's. By this concept, advantage is taken for the production of woody biomass material, of the fast growing period in the early years of growth and of the possibility after harvesting the aboveground part of the young trees of re-sprouting from cut stumps. The present project was an attempt to demonstrate this concept from a technical and a profitability standpoint.
160 ha of hardwood coppice forestry were planted at the rate of 80 ha per year. It was expected to harvest after a 5 year growing cycle. Similarly, 80 ha of single stem conifers were planted at a density of 40 kstems per ha.
The project was continued in a second phase under contract nr SE/205/81/IR.
To produce biomass material for future energy production by planting 60 hectares of coppice and 80 hectares of single stem forestry, according to the concept of "short rotation forestry" for the production of energy in the major form of electricity.
