HEATING OF PORK-BREEDING STABLES WITH SOLAR ENERGY

Objetivo

Use of solar energy for heating of three pig farms.
A ground floor temperatures of 27-32 deg. C is required that usually is obtained by means of infrared lamps. In this project these are substituted by solar collectors and radiant floor, with an improvement on the maintenance, hygienic conditions and reduction on costs.

A surface of 1937 sqm of solar collectors for the three farms will provide 70% of total energy requirements. A thermal stock of 180.000 l divided in 4 volumes of 22.000 38.000 and 2 x 60.000 l. will distribute the heated water through the floor. A conventional boiler with fuel may cover the total demand when necessary. The radiant floor is constituted by modules of different size, all connected to the distribution grid.
The project consists of the heating of 3 pork-breeding stables. In each stable, a solar system is installed, composed of solar thermal collectors, a buffer storage tank and a floor radiative heating. The primary loop connects the solar collectors to the storage tank, and the secondary loop the storage tank to the floor heating with polypropylene tubes in the floor.
The storage tanks are in reinforced concrete, covered at the inner side with tar, and two different commercial flat plate collectors types are used.
The system includes a conventional auxiliary heaterto cover the energy needs in cloudy weather conditions or partly on nice days.
Farm: "La Esperanza-Seleccion" :The solar collector loop has a heat exchanger and the circulating fluid is an anti-freeze mixture. The total collector surface is 188 m2 and the buffer heat storage has 22 m3 capacity with 8 cm of insulation. The heat radiant floor heating consists of 144 modules of 0.95 m2 each.
Farm: "La Esperanza-Nucleo 3" :In this farm, 320 m2 of collectors are installed and the storage buffer is 30 m3. Farm nr 2 : 638 m2 of collectors are installed and the buffer storage is 60 m3. The radiative floor heating covers 660 m2 surface.
Farm nr 3 : The collector surface is 790 m2 with a buffer storage of 60 m3. The radiative floor heating covers 654 m2. An auxiliary fuel burner is installed in all farms, bearing in mind that the minimum absolute temperatures in this mountain area are low and could lead to a high piglet death rate if the stable temperature gets below a required minimum.
