DEMONSTRATION OF MULTIFONCTION SOLAR ENERGY PANELS

Objective

The project aims to demonstrate the concept of an energy saving system based on the use of the multi-function solar energy panels - the so called MF-panels. These panels can operate as a solar collector and as heat exchanger, depending on the need and the time of the day and the period of the year.
The project aims to :
- substitute electrical power and natural gas for heating purposes.
The MF-panel concept has been demonstrated on a workshop at Wewer's Brickyard near the township of Helsinge in Denmark.
The measurements showed that the performance of the MF-panel system is higher than what could be expected based on the experience from the test of the prototype of the MF-panel. Both the performance of the MF-panel as solar collector and as heat exchanger was higher than expected. If the MF-panel system had operated with low flow rates, the yearly performance would have been 353 kWh/m2 (higher than for many liquid based solar heating systems).
In a more ideal building with optimal flow rate of air through the panel, the yearly performance of the MF-panel system would have been 910 kWh/m2. This high performance would be even higher, if the MF-panel system also allowed to preheat domestic hot water especially during the summer time, where the MF-panel otherwise would be switched off due to no demand for space heating and preheating of ventilation air.
An MF-panel concept with an integrated liquid based absorber for preheating of domestic hot water has based on the experience from the demonstration project been developed in a project partly financed by the Danish Ministry of Energy. This project shows, that the performance of the MF-panel may be increased 200-400 kWh/m2 per year dependent on the actual demand for domestic hot water.
The Multi-function Solar Panels has been installed (integrated) in an existing heating and ventilation system of an industrial building complex for production of "brick-beams". On the roof of the building 126 m2 of MF-panels were installed on the south facing part. (MF-panels = the commercialized name of the Multi-Function Solar Energy Panels). The MF-panels operate in two district modes :
During summer periods and/or day time, the MF-panels will mainly serve as solar-energy collector. During winter periods and/or night time, the MF-panels will mainly serve as heat-exchanger system. Switching from the "solar energy collector mode" to the "heat-exchanger mode" and vice versa is simply done by operating some flaps in the manifold construction.
