CONVERSION OF WASTE CHICKEN LITTER INTO USABLE STEAM ENERGY BY AN INNOVATIVE INCINERATION SYSTEM

Objetivo

To demonstrate the conversion of waste chicken litter into useable steam energy using a three stage solid refractory hearth incinerator. It is proposed to build a demonstration unit with a capacity of 165 tonnes per week. Steam will be produced at a rate of 3,500 kg per hour with seven bar pressure at 171 degrees centigrade.
The innovative aspects are in the design of the waste handling and combustion process, a new solid refractory hearth with pulsed air input is proposed. The energy produced is estimated to be 1931 tonnes/yr, giving a payback period for a commercial plant of four years.

The material to be incinerated is chicken litter which is a combination of approximately 18% wood shavings and 82% chicken waste and feathers. Typically, the litter has a moisture content of 23% and a calorific value of 12.3 mg/kg and an ignition temperature of 540 degrees centigrade. When combusted, it yields 12% ash which has a high nitrate and potassium content and this may be used as a fertilizer.
Chicken litter is difficult to burn satisfactorily using the normal type of mechanical hearth, due to a high ash production and 'slagging' of the waste leading to incomplete combustion. In this project, a new design of combustion chamber is proposed, which will use a fixed refractory hearth with pulsating air jets in the main chamber. A 3 stage combustion process is proposed. Pre-heated combustion air from the main chamber will be introduced via jets along the entire length of the 2nd and third stage chambers, to maintain maximum turbulance and retention time of the waste. The frequency, strength and aptitude of the pulsing strokes will be varied by experiment to achieve optimum combustion results. It is proposed to burn 165 tonnes of waste per week for 49 weeks in the demonstration unit. It will produce 3,500 kg steam per hour for 132 hours per week.
This steam energy will provide a combined heat and power unit producing electricity and heat through a steam turbine generator. These heat and electricity will be used to heat and light 5 acres glasshouses to grow fruits, flowers and plants.
