DECENTRALIZED COMBINED HEAT AND POWER PRODUCTION BASED ON STRAW, WASTE, BARK AND WOOD CHIPS

Obiettivo

The aim of the project is to establish a decentralized combined heat (9MWh) and power (3 MWh) station which utilizes local renewable energy sources, straw, domestic refuse, wood chips, and coal dust.
This project had limited success on its innovative aspects ie, the co-combustion of municipal waste, straw, coal and wood. It was proven that with this type of furnace, it was not possible to operate the coal burner continuously, while the combustion of straw created severe slag problems. Also, straw proven to be expensive as and additional fuel.

Only the addition of wood chips to the municipal waste prove successful but this can be considered as standard technology therefore, while the further commercialisation of municipal waste incineration is certain, the combination of wastes to be incinerated can not be commercialized with this type of technology.
The idea of the project is to use a mixture of biomass fuels and coal dust to produce steam, pressure 50 bar and temperature of 125 deg. C, for the production of power and heat. The concept consists of the following elements:
1. Mixing of fuels in proportions dependent on season and combustion technique
2. Start and cooling of the boiler by means of a coal dust burner, reducing the environmental inconveniences of the flue gasses
3. The heat storage tank ensures an optimum utilization of the energy production.
The project has been implemented in Vejen.
The plant will operate according to an operational strategy in terms of combustion which secures that the incineration takes place by the correct temperatures and residence times in order to minimize the formation of dioxine and other pollutants
The fuels are mixed in well-defined ratios dependent on season and supply, providing a more homogenous and adjustable combustion in the boiler.
The plant is based on the reception of domesticwaste, straw delivered in Heston bales and wood chips from sawmills.
The drying section consists of pre-combustion chamber mounted with a 2 MW coal dust burner, partly replacing a radiation arch. The combustion chamber will constantly keep a low pressure, providing a correct coal combustion. The plant produces approx 15.7 tons of steam/h at just above 425 deg. C which is transformed into approx 3 MW electrical energy (turbine) and 9 MW thermal energy (heat exchangers), or 13 MW thermal energy when only heat is produced.
