AQUIFER THERMAL ENERGY STORAGE FACILITY COUPLED TO A HEAT AND POWER COGENERATION PLANT

Objectif

Demonstration of the technical and economic feasibility of the integration of a heat and power cogeneration installation with an aquifer thermal energy storage in an existing large conventional heating system.

The project will take place at the TNO-Zuidpolder Complex in Delft and will consist of a gasmotor with a co-generated capacity of 155 kW electricity and 260 kW heat. As the plant must produce its full output throughout the year in order to meet the electricity demands of the complex there is a surplus of heat for about 275 days of the year amounting to 1720 MWh. This heat will be stored in an aquifer at a depth of 15-32 m below the surface. The expected thermal efficiency is 70% implying that 1200 MWh of heat can be produced in winter. The temperature level of the storage is approximately 90 deg. C. and in every cycle about 40000 CU m of hot water will be stored. The aquifer is bounded top and bottom by 10 to 15 m of clay.
Extensive site investigations have been carried out confirms the appropriate condition of the aquifer for a medium scale aquifer thermal energy storage (ates) facility.
Prior to the operational phase of the demonstration plant the ates facility will be tested extensively to establish optimal operational parameters for the lifetime of the system. Monitoring equipment will be installed for the initial testing and evaluation phases of the total system.
