Obiettivo The aim of this project is to substitute thermoplastic polymer coating for lacquered aluminium and steel can stock and for aluminium telecommunications cable wrap. To demonstrate that the process and product, already developed on a pilot scale, can be uprated in speed and quantity shilst raising product quality and reducing can coating costs. The project should show that the forecast energy savings are achievable consistently on a production scale. The process allows modified polypropylene, NYLON, H.D.P.E. and P.E.T. to be directly bonded to a metal substrate without the need for pre-coated adhesives or solvent removal operations. The process is a coil lamination operation in which the metal substrate is pre-heated, coextruded films are then simultaneously nipped on to the two surfaces of the substrate, then the laminate is reheated to activate the metal/polymer bond. This is then followed by quenching and recoiling. Energy is saved and atmospheric pollution is reduced by eliminating the need to remove solvents from either adhesives or lacquer coatings. The demonstration plant throughput and energy consumption will be monitored and the product will be subject to rigorous tests relating to durability, corrosion and customer acceptance.
