APPLICATION OF THE THERMAL DIODE PRINCIPLE TO THE RECOVERY OF HEAT IN THE SMOKE OF HEAVY FUEL BURNING BOILERS

Obiettivo

Loss of heat to the chimney of steam producing boilers amounts to 15 - 20 % of the geat given by fuel combustion.
Recovery of this loss by direct exchange smoke/water is prohibited if heavy fuel is used in the boiler, as acid condensate will corrode metallic parts of exchangers.
The aim of the project is to demonstrate that recovery is economically feasible if a water/steam pressurized between smoke and the water to by heated.
Last interim report pointed 47 375 Kwh energy savings for 2488 hours of data collection. Published literatureL% Belgian patent no 904 602 on the 16th April 1986.
1)Technology
The thermal diode is formed by a water to steam loop running between a evaporator exchanger inserted in the smoke duel and a condensor exchanger cooled by the make-up water feeding the boiler itself. The fluid used, just purified water, fills the evaporator to a predetermined level. The thermal diode is pressurized by steam to a point where evaporation takes place above the dew point of condensable acids. Regulation of steam introduction is the key of the prevention of corrosion and ordinary materials may be used for the exchanger.
2) Economics
Cost of studies, appliances and monitoring 4 000 000 BEF = Eligible cost.
3)Monitoring
A heat meter is inserted in the cooling water loop.
Data are read every eight hours day and night.
Boiler is fired five days a week.
