CONNECTION OF UNDERWATER SYSTEMS OF PIPELINES/FLOWLINES

Objetivo

The objective of the project was to undertake engineering design and detail of a simplified diverless, modular flowline pull-in and connection system which can be universally applied to a variety of subsea oil and/or gas production scenarios.
The aim was to use a fresh approach by generating new concepts, which allowed for a modularised system to be developed around the basic concepts conceived. By this method it was possible to design a system having a universal application which will suit various combinations of subsea installations, including single, multiple and bundled flowline/pipeline applications.
The CUSP project was successful in producing an innovative, efficient design of a system with the following advantages:
- Flowline alignment is achieved through a single continuous operation thus minimising complex mechanisation.
- Structural clamping is achieved as a separate function from sealing. (The seal being the possible weakness in any connector).
- Flowline engagement is achieved through direct tension eliminating friction effects.
- Cellular design has ensured all possible combinations are considered ie, bunded, single or multiple flowlines. The cellular concept offers simultaneous connection of multiple lines.
- The aims of universal design also address control lines whether they be hydraulic or electrical.
- Installation tooling is innovative but simplistic due to careful interface design. Hydraulic actuators are utilised thus enabling a robust, efficient diverless installation and retrieval sequence.
- Pipework from Xmas trees, manifolds, etc, can be readily aligned to the pulled in pipe/flowlines by a unique unit which has no moving parts and is permanently fitted to the associated support framework.
- Lightweight delivery system which allows for various methods of installation and retrieval using conventional ROVs, etc.
- A new and innovative connector which has many potential subsea applications.
- Guidelineless, diverless installations.
The project addressed the engineering design of the complete system from concepts through to a fully specified prototype package for manufacture and testing. The overall system breaks down into four sub-sections :
a. Pipe Alignment and Lockdown Structure
b. Universal delivery and guidance system for the tooling packages
c. Flowline pull-in equipment
d. Telescopic Connector and operating equipment.
Full detailed engineering drawings were produced, including system GA's, component assemblies and details.
