A SUBMERGED VEHICLE TOOL SYSTEM

Objective

Development of a submerged vehicle tool system.
Operation of these devices is readily possible in the company's in-house test tank facility where the necessary operator training has been carried out.
1) A claw device has been developed wich carries out a number of the requirements without the employment of special tools. This device has been fitted to the machine developed under contrat 13/15 and has proved capable and adaptable in many situations. It is capable of continuous rotation and can therefore be used to operate rotating tools without the addition of an extra power unit. A special grip receptacle is provided to enable tools to be gripped concentrically and thereby rotated.
2) Screwdriver tools, drills, spanners and saws can be provided with this grip, but is should be noted that on many occasions the claw jaws are capable of gripping nuts, bolts, valves etc. without additional tooling.
3) The rotary brush tool is help in the claw device and can undertake various tasks through the employment of various sizes and grades of bristle. Brush diameters up to 22" have been emplyed.
4) An ultrasonic surveying head has been developed, incorporating a liner array of transducersenabling object to be detected. This can be mounted on the rotating portion of the wrist to provide the necessary scanning in azimuth and bearing.
5) A submerged stud welder has been demonstrated wherein the energy imparted to the weld produces a pressure rise in the molten metal exceeding ambient sea pressure, hence producing metallurgically uncontaminated weld.
6) An impact driver has been developed: results from this were disappointing due to limitation of terminal velocity achieved from internal mass. An electro magnetic device is under investigation, using a pulse power supply developed for the welding device described above.
7) Seismic investigation of subsea surfaces has proved possible using the impact driver in conjunction with the ultrasonic surveying head.
