DEEP SEA REPAIR

Ziel

The object of this project was to design, build and test in the workshop and at shallow depths an automatic system for preparation of the ends of pipelines, controlled from the surface, in order to connect up pipelines on the sea bottom.
The various items of equipment of the prototype system have been built and satisfactorily tested in the workshop. Subsea trials have then been performed on the complete procedure of the equipment, including each of the necessary tools, except the concrete removal one which was not essential to prove the system.
These subsea trials first started in shallow depth (10 m) at Saint Nazaire in July 1984. A final rehearsal took place in the "Baie de Douarnenez" from the D.S.V. Seacom, on her way to the deep water site in the Loch Linnhe -West Scotland, under the EEC/GERTH/COMEX/ALSTHOM contract nr TH 10042/83 "DEEP SEA REPAIR TRIALS"
The deep sea trials were successfully run in 135 m, in a remarkably short time (5,5 days operation - 26.11.84 - 03.12.84),completely remotely controlled from the Seacom without any diving assistance.
This operation set a world first in subsea industry and fully proved the efficiency of this deep sea pipe repair system.
The system has been designed to carry out the following tasks, down to depths of 1 000 metre :
- removal of the concrete
- removal of the anti-corrosion coating
- clean cut off of the end of the tube
- cleaning of the interior
- machining of the longitudinal welding bead on the tube.
It comprises a structure that lifts the end of the pipeline and attaches to it, together with a removable table on which the tools for machining the ends of the pipeline are laid.
The prototype robot has been built for a useful depth of 300 metres and has carried out tasks 2 to a above.
The system is modular. No divers are used. The handling operations are performed without guide lines, the package being positioned by acoustic and video systems. The robot is fully remote controlled from the surface. It is assisted by a remote controlled submarine (ROV) for its operational, observation and emergency functions.
