INSTRUMENT-FITTED PIPELINE SCRAPER FOR INSPECTION OF CATHODIC PROTECTION (FEASIBILITY STUDY)

Obiettivo

Considering the costs and difficulties involved in the external submarine cathodic protection inspection techniques, the surveys are executed only in the vicity of the offshore platforms or close to the shores, and they are completed by spot readings along the pipeline route where the pipe can be reached easily.
The objective of the project is to circumvent the constraints and draw-backs associated with the use of the external methods and marine facilities for this type of inspection, by using an instrumented pig (pipeline internal scraper) running through the pipeline, enabling the pipe potential to be reconstituted and protection defaults to be located and measured.

This instrument - fitted scraper for cathodic protection survey will bring about undisputed advances with respect to existing methods as to speed and ease of execution of this type of inspections, moreover providing continuous measurement of potential all along the pipeline.
The potential gradient and current density between 2 points of the line, as well as the electromagnetic field changes will be continuously recorded during the pig run.
An external work station will analyse and shape the recorded data. Following processing, potential and current curves along the line will be plotted, with indication of special points marked by a protection flaw.
Gradients of potential and electromagnetic fields to be recorded and analyzed are very little, except where coating is defective, and the measuring systems shall have very good performances. Potential or current measurements will be made by contact on the pipewall. It will be therefore mandatory to know at any time the values of contactresistances.
Also, it will have to be coped with electromagnetic interferences ( though these phenomena (thouare limited in the caseof submarine pipelines), and with the measuring electronics drift, especially with temperature.
These complicated parameters will form the subject of comprehensive theoretical and experimental studies to secure the project viaability.
The feasibility study, for which EEC funds have been granted will include the following phases:. Detailed theoretical study of the electrical and electrochemical phenomena associated with cathodic protection of underwater pipelines.. Definition and pre-project of the measurement electronics ( electronics not fitted on board the scraper in view of preliminary bench-testing).. Design and construction of the shop test-bench, comprising tube and scraper with pulling device for travel through the tube.. Construction of the measurement electronics and instrumentation for the test-bench.. Bench testing and experimental determination of the measurement parameters and conditions.

This feasibility study is planned for 15 to 18 months.
