CONSTRUCTION TECHNIQUES IN LIMESTONES FOR CRYOGENIC STORAGE

Objective

To extend and develop existing underground rock cavern technology with a view to constructing 100,000 T of underground refrigerated LPG storage in Dublin Bay Limestone.
The geological, geotechnical and geophysical appraisal established the overall suitability of Dublin Bay Limestone for refrigerated LPG storage. The feasibility studies established the overall environmental acceptability, the preliminary design configuration and geometry and the likely economics of the project.
The project includes the following main elements:
- detailed geological investigation and geological appraisal of the port area of Dublin
- comprehensive feasibility studies of the environmental, hazard, technical design, and economic aspects
- construction of an exploratory shaft to an approximate depth of 110 m and performing comprehensive tests
- construction of scaled down test cavern and performing comprehensive tests to determine wether full scale cavern and the final design configuration.
