150 KW GRID CONNECTED WIND TURBINE COUPLED TO AN EXISTING THREE LEVEL PUMPING STATION IN CRETA ISLAND

Objetivo

Demonstration of the technical and economic feasibility of a horizontal axis 150 KW wind turbine coupled directly to a drinking water pumping station and in paralel with the public grid. The innovation lies in the microprocessor based control system optimising the output of the wind turbine using the two of the three existing pumping units and the grid as load.
Wind Turbine installed in April 1990 and inaugurated the 11/11/1990. The WT will not be connected to the grig up to April 91.
The NORDTANK 150 KW, 3 bladed, 22.2 m diameter, wind turbine will be installed at Anogia next to the pumping station which pumps up water from 800 m in three stages and with installed units of 155 KW, 74 and 110 KW respectively. The wind turbine is a fixed pitch up-wind machine with stall regulation, asynchronous generator and electrical yawing. Air brakes are incorporated in the blade tips and a hydraulic brake system is used. An integrated gear system consisting of main shaft, main bearings transmission, yaw systems, brake system and generator support is built as one compact factory-made unit. In order to obtain the highest amount possible of energy savings the machine will be directly coupled to the pumping units and in parallel, connected to the grid. A microprocesor based control system will be designed and constructed for the optimization of the system's energy savings. In case of emergency it may also operate autonomously. The annual energy yeld is 500 MWh and the estimatedpayback time of this project about 6 years.
