MONOPTEROS-15 IN TRANCOSO, PORTUGAL

Objective

To demonstrate the decentralised electricity generation for rural applications in Portugal by means of a stall controled wind turbine combined to diesel generator set.

A stall regulated, one-bladed MONOPTEROS-15 wind turbine build by MBB will be installed near a Catholic Seminary in Trancoso, and will be connected to the weak local grid. In case of grid failure a diesel generator set will provide the necessary electricity in order to assure uninterupted electricity supply and to prevent the 25 kW asynchronous generator at the wind turbine from overspeeding. Additional components such as load resistances will be incorporated in order to ensure the desired control characteristics.
The wind turbine is of downwind type with a cut-in wind speed of 4.5 m/s, the rated speed is reached at 14 m/s and the cut-out speed is 18 m/s, and is expected to generate about 32000 kWh/yr.
The demonstration phase will show the reliability of the wind turbine and the whole system and will indicate more clearly whether the system may become economically viable or not.
