Obiettivo Demonstration of the use of an uprated HOWDEN 330 kW wind turbine incorporating innovative cost reduction features and its integration into the diesel powered electricity supply system on the island of Mykonos, Greece.The HOWDEN HWP 330 Wind Turbine will be uprated to 400-500 kW in order to obtain maximum energy at the high wind speeds of 11 m/s at the site of installation on Mykonos island in Greece.HOWDEN Wind Turbines Ltd together with the Public Power Corporation will carry out a detailed analysis of the wind regime in order to determine the turbulence intensity level and wind shear on the site. Analysis of the data will also assess standard deviation on 1 second, hourly and mean wind speeds at various heights.Innovations concern cost reduction features, including new designs of tower, bedplate, nacelle cover, power electrics, drive train layout and control system. The 33 m wood/epoxy blades will be modified, if necessary. Demonstration phase will last 2 years and operational monitoring data including stops, starts, high wind, low wind, output figures. Structural monitoring will be carried out to establish loads on various parts of the system. The actual payback period for this project isestimated to 17 years (machine life 25 years) but it is expected that the commercial version will allow a payback time of about 6 years. If the project is successful it could lead to the installation of wind turbines in remote islands at present dependent on diesel generation as well as to the installation of wind turbines in areas with very high wind speeds and turbulence factors.
