DEEP SEA STEEL PIPELINE

Objetivo

The purpose of the project was to solve the problems set by laying, repairing and using subsea pipelines with diamenters of up 40", under difficult sea conditions and in depths of up to 500 m. This project had the following two main objectives:
- to improve existing techniques and means if possible extend their limits
- depending on the operational or economic limits of these techniques, to study and develop new methods.

The development and application of the dynamic computation programme turned out to be a very delicate matter and this programme cannot be considered as operational. The studies performed on anchoring systems and the equipment of the laying barges enabled the depth limits to be at 300 to 400 m for a 30" pipeline and about 800 m for a 12" pipeline.
No applications were found for the anti-heave system for handling heavy packages,owing to its complexity and size.
Three new techniques underwent testing in the North Sea:
- a test of towing a 16" pipeline with buoys and 1,000 m in length in moray firth in december 1975. This test was performed in turn on the surface and then sub-surface (-15 m), in winds of force 8 to 10, and proved the feasibility of this method, with sub-surface towing coming out ahead.
- A test on laying with the RAT method (end-connection under tension of a section of pipeline towed to site) near stavanger in june 1977. A false manoeuvre of the tug caused by bad weather broke the towed section.
- a test of welding a pipeline at great depth using WELDAP method. The tests took place in february 1978 Erdfjord near stavanger in 265 m water depth. A manual weld was made on a 20" diamer tube inside a chamber maintained at atmospheric pressure.
