10 KW VERTICAL AXIS WIND TURBINE FOR GREENHOUSE HEATING

Objetivo

Heating of a 200 square metre greenhouse by a 10 KW vertical axis multi-storey wind turbine working in parallel with the existing boiler.
The electricity produced by the wind turbine will be used to drive a heat pump and to heat water directly.
The project is located at Landunvez, near Ploudalmezeau, Bretagne. The estimated annual yield is 20 000 KWh.
Wind turbine was installed in April 1992.
A 10 KW vertical axis, Darrieus type, multi-storey wind turbine will be built by the firm Le Materiel Magnetique and installed at Landunvez, near Ploudalmezeau, Bretagne next to a 200 sqm greenhouse for heating purposes. It will be a two storey design with a swept surface of 25 sqm per storey and an energy output of 750 to 1000 KWh per sqm and per year (20 000 KWh/y). The diameter is 6 m and the blade length 4 m. This design has all advantages of a vertical axis wind turbine and additionally that it may be expanded by the addition of more storeys afterwards.
The wind turbine will deliver energy to the warm water circuit of the greenhouse by means of electrical heaters and a vapour compression cycle heat pump. The electricity will drive the compressor of the heat pump. The excess electricity will be used for water heating.
