160 KW WIND TURBINE IN COMBINATION WITH TOTAL ENERGY AGGREGATE

Cel

A Bouma 160 kW turbine will operate at Deersum (community of Boarnsterhim) in combination with 15 kW of total energy aggregates (for electricity heat) in parallel operation with the mainland grid. The innovation concerns the integration of a wind turbine in a local electricity grid in the countryside in combination with the total energy aggregates.
Estimated annual yield 205.000 kWh. (See also BM/606/84).
The objective of this project was to demonstrate the feasibility of a wind turbine in combination with a collective manure digestion plant for electricity generation in rural communities. The turbine used in the project is a 160-kW model; the digestion plant has a digester volume of 210 m3 and receives manure from a number of cattle farms. Performance measurements were made in the period from early 1988 until early 1989. The electricity demand of Deersum amounted to 331,000 kWh per year.
The wind turbine produced 222,000 kWh electricity per year, which is approx. 10 % more than anticipated.
Electricity production from the digestion plant amounted to 33,000 kWh per year. This is over 50 % less than the design figure, due to a number of teething troubles relating to the manure pumps, desulpherisation of the gas and low efficiency of the conversion into electricity. Also, scum formation was experienced in the digester from time to time.
During the measuring period, the aggregate electricity output amounted to 255,000 kWh per year. Of this, 69 % (176,000 kWh) was utilized in Deersum. Thus, the wind turbine and the dighestion plant could meet half of the electricity demand of Deersum. The balance was covered by the provincial energy utility PEB Friesland.
The surplus electricity, 31 % or 79,000 kWh per year, was delivered to PEB Friesland.
This project has proven that wind and blogas can be attractive energy sources especially for rural communities. The project is now ripe for replication and soon will be commercialized.
A small-medium size wind turbine of Bouma, 160 KW will provide electricity to the local electricity grid at Deersum (community of Boarnsterhim) North Netherlands. It will also be combined with total energy aggregates with an installed power of 15 KW for water heating. Both, wind turbine and aggregates will be connected to the national grid. Wind turbine characteristics : 3 bladed, upwind, 20 m diameter, tower height 30 m, asynchronous generator (160 KW), cut-in windspeed 5 m/sec and cut-out 30 m/sec. As at the place of installation the annual mean windspeed is about 5 m/sec, the estimated annual yield is 205.000 KWh, which corresponds to an annual saving of 53 TOE. The cost per KW from the wind turbine is expected to be 0.21 DFL while the conventional price is 0.26 DFL. The payback time is 11 years.
