Objetivo In order to achieve more complete coking of the tar, refractory materials are preheated in a controlled atmosphere to which extra nitrogen has been added. The target was to save about 66 kg. of fuel for every tonn of end-product produced. The oven mesurements in terms of air flow, temperature distribution, oxygen content, speed of depth of coking, oven insulation were satisfactory.Use of a controlled atmosphere has proved helpful for products prepared from raw materials extracted from Magnesian rocks. On the other hand raw materials from dolomitic rocks are hydrated by moisture in the ambient atmosphere and therefore result in products of substandard quality. In order to reduce the level of humidity caused by infiltrations of humid external air and insulation chamber was built at the oben inlet. Its impact was beeing measured but without positive results. We can say that the demonstration project has been a failure. The kiln makes refractory materials by subjecting the materials to heat treatment using oil tar. The tar is then converted into coke. The heavy energy concumption of conventional kilns is reduced by switching to a kiln capable of recycling the residual heat. The coke-oven gases discharged from the kiln are burned in a combustion chamber, with a heat exchanger tapping the residual heat to preheat the articles prior to firing. The articles are heated from ambient temperature up to around 350 deg.C.
