ENERGY SAVING AND INTEGRATION OF A HEAT PUMP IN A DAIRY

Objective

This project had several aims:
- to gain experience of the techniques involved in heat pump
installation
- to improve the integration of the installation's
various components, including regulation
- to examine the effect of problems specific to the food sector (eg. the
use, as a heat source for the pump, of water polluted by different
residues)
- the comparison of calculated and actual energy savings to establish
the project's economic viability.
Technically the project proved to be efficient: measurements taken during a period of reduced activity demonstrated that 40% of estimated energy saving were achieved. However, restructuring of the factory prevented the expected energy savings being achieved.
Residual heat from the cleaning water was recovered by the heat pump and heat exchanger and used to heat new cleaning water. Heat from the ammonia used in the refrigeration plant was also recovered. Heat given off from the cooling whey was used to heat the cheese milk.
All heat recovery systems are microprocessor controlled.
