IMPROVED, MORE EFFICIENT FUME CUPBOARD AIR SUPPLY SYSTEM FOR LABORATORIES

Objective

To demonstrate savings in energy consumption and increase of air quality in laboratories by controlling the exhaust air of the hoods versus the sash opening. The exhaust air velocity will be kept constant in the sash opening of the cupboard by varying the position of an air damper in the hood. The supply of conditioned air in the laboratory will vary to compensate the exhaust air flow rate through the hoods. Energy will be saved in temperature and humidity control of the supplied conditioned air as well as for the electricity consumption of the fans. The general idea of the project is innovative.

A control system has been developed that reduces the exhaust air of fume cupboards due to volume rate controls proportional to the sash opening. This system is combined with a room pressure control unit for laboratories, a problem free control system for air supplies to and from laboratories results. The exhaust air control system for fume cupboards works by measuring the inlet velocity prior the differential pressure inside the fume cupboard and the laboratory. If the sash of the fume cupboard is opened, the flow rate increases linearly the sash opening. In this way, closed sashes will yield much reduced exhaust air demands and this will yield high savings of energy usually employed to condition the air to the laboratory.
This project will demonstrate that the new concept of laboratory and fume cupboard control system functions in practice and yields the forecasted 40 to 60 % of energy saving. As shown in the description of the project, tremendous energy savings can be achieved for various countries within the European Community.
