RE-USE OF WASTE HEAT OF FURNACES OF A STEEL ROLLING MILL IN DISTRICT HEATING IN CHATELET

Cel

- To recover heat from the cooling water of the grates, doors and other parts of two reheating furnaces of the steel rolling will at Carlam and to use it in the form of hot water for district heating in the town of Chatelet.
- To build the district heating network in Chatelet.
- To install a 15 MW boiler system to handle load peaks and stoppages (not financially supported by the EEC).
Commercial operation started 1 month ahead of schedule on 1.10.1985.
The measuring and demonstration phase has been postponed to the heating period 1987-1988 due to the fact that until now not enough consumers are connected to the heating network to take up its nominal of 5 MW, being a prerequisite for a representative demonstration. (No report on this is available).
The first construction phase covers an area known as the "rue de la Blanchisserie". This phase was completed in the spring of 1982.
The second phase consisted of the building of the network from the Carlam plant to the "rue de la Blanchisserie" and from there to another downstream area as well as of the construction of the heat recovery system and connections at the Carlam steel will.
Construction was due to start on 1.06.82 and be completed by November 1984. Thereafter, testing and measurement were to take another year leading to the start of the commercial operation by 1.11.1985.
The total cost of the project is BF 137 million, which is BF 46 million more than for a conventional heating system for a similar capacity. The EEC support is limited to this investment cost difference.
Compared to a conventional urban system based on fuel, an annual saving of 2,380 TOE is expected. Compared to the current system of individual heaters, the total saving is estimated at 2,760 TOE per annum.
The 2,380 TOE annual saving is calculated to amount to BF 26.8 million from which BF 4.9 million of additional depreciation and higher operating cost have to be deducted, leaving a net saving of BF 21.9 million, equivalent to a 2.1 year payback on the additional investment (of BF 46 million).
