HIGH SULPHUR LIGNITE IN CIRCULATING FLUIDIZED BED BOILER

Cel

To design and construct an industrial boiler capable of burning high sulphur (4-5%) fuel while remaining within pollution limits, without increasing user costs and capable of replacing existing installations.

This contract relates only to the innovative part of the project ( Phases 1 & 2): these involve development/conceptual studies to be followed by detailed studies on equipment manufacture.
It is intended that the moving fluidized bed boiler (without external exchanger) will allow for desulphurisation without the addition of lime or chalk; fine or rough coal may be used.
The steam generator consists mainly of a hearth and the ash recycling cyclone.
Total cost of plant and equipment is estimated at FF 47,140,000 while predicted fuel saving is calculated at FF 8,436,00. Fluidized bed boiler costs are estimated at between 5. 4 and 8. 6 years.
The boiler will have a steam output of 8 T/h at 450 deg. C, 50 Bar and a 63. 4 MW rating. Work is scheduled to commence in March 1986 ( Phase 1) with the second phase from July 1986, ending August 1987.
In order to encourage sulphur absorption the following conditions must be met:
- total contact between gases and ashes;
- the maintenance of a constant 850-880 deg. C temperature in the reaction zone;
- the contact time between gas and ashes must be as long as possible.
Two possibilities exist for regulating oven temperature:
- exterior exchanger on a solid ash circuit;
- check on the energy absorption in the cooling area around the oven.
The solution used in this project relies on control of the variation of the head transfer coefficient, relative to the density of the bed. In fact, it should be possible to adjust bed density and act on the energy absorption in the oven (this calls for good geometric combustion chamber design and the possibility of adapting the divisions of the primary and secondary air, as well as the possibility of cracking the different levels of secondary air injection).
The mastery of this technique necessitates an analysis of the boiler's functioning and in particular, of all the problems allied to combustion and spreading in the oven (in the 'transitory regime' ).
The use of an auxiliary on an installation of this type presents several technological difficulties not yet resolved: the 'debit' of steam (+/- 86 000 Nm3/h), the high level of dust removal and SO2 residue. It is also intended to study the incidence of the filtering facility on the rate of desulphurization.
