ON SITE DEVELOPMENT OF BIOGAS GENERATING STATIONS

Cel

To construct seven biogas digesters, each to be inexpensive, cost efficient and simple to assemble.
1. CINEY 1: mean retention time 40-60 days. Depollution was estimated by the COD-based conversion which averaged 33%. Biogas production rate approached 1 m3 biogas (2/3 methane) per m3 of working volume/day. Biogas was not used.
2. CINEY 2: Biogas production rate was 0. 6 m3 biogas (2/3 methane) per m3 of working volume/day.
3. BAILLONVILLE: the digestion substrate is diluted poultry manure. Working temperature is 35 C. The gas production rate averages 1 volume of biogas (2/3 methane) per m3 of working volume/day. 30% of the energy is recycled to heat the digester. Energy production is equivalent to 2. 600 kg propane/yr. Net biogas production is used to heat the farm-house and poultry nursery.
4. GELUWE: gas production rate is 0. 9 volume of biogas (2/3 methane) per m3 of working volume/day. Depollution is estimated by COD-based conversion which averaged 50%. The biogas is used in a total energy electricity generator of 15 kW. Hot water production amounts to 860 MJ/day, equivalentto 11. 500 l fuel/yr. Electricity production is 58 kWh/day. 25% of the energy is recycled to the digester. Based on actual production data, price of produced biogas amounts to 8. 2 BF/m3.
5. CORROY-LE-CHATEAU: operating temperature is 35 C. Mean retention time averages 40 days. Influent concentration is 5. 5% (dry matter basis). The gas production rate averages 0. 55 volumes of biogas (2 /3 methane) per m3 of working volume/day. Depollution, estimated by COD conversion, amounts to 70%. The biogas is used in a total energy electricity generator of 16 kW. 24% of the energy is recycled to the methane digester of which 80% is for heating purposes and 20% for loading and mixing purposes. The useful electricity production is 135 kWh/day.
6. OTEGEM: influent has a dry matter concentration of between 9 and 12%. Gas production rate averaged during the starting period 0.
4 volumes (2/3 methane) per m3 of working volume/day. The biogas will be used as boiler fuel.
7. HELECINE: the digesteris continuously loaded at a rate of 2 kg dry matter per m3 of working volume/day. Digestion temperature is maintained at 35 C. Mean residence times average 20 days.
The biogas will be used to heat the poultry barns. 20% of the produced energy needs to be recycled for use in the biogas plant.
8. LO-RENINGE: biogas is used in a total energy electricity generator of 16 kW. The digestion substrate is pig manure, originating from 3350 pigs. Gas production rate is 0. 9 volumes of biogas (2/3 methane) per m3 of working volume/day. Useful heat production is 2170 MJ/day, equivalent to 28,000 l fuel/yr. Useful electricity production is 380 kWh/day.
9. BASSEVELDE: biogas is used in a total energy electricity generator of 16 kW. Digestion substrate is a mixture of bovine and pig manure. Gas production rate is 0. 9 volumes of biogas (2/3 methane) per m3 of working volume. Useful heat production is 1420 MJ/day, equivalent to 19,000 l fuel/yr. Useful electricity production is 110 kWh/day. Operates at 30 C.
1. CINEY 1: infinitely mixed, continuous load digester 5 m3 capacity. The tank is a vertical glass fibre reinforced polyester insulated cylinder located in Meux. Discarded animal matter is the substrate; the system operates at 35 C. A dilacerating pump immersed in the digester circulates the fermenting matter.
2. CINEY 2: infinitely mixed continuous load type reinforced polyester vertical cylindrical digester 20 m3 capacity located in Meux. Cattle slurry scraped from Cineys market floor, is the substrate. Temperature maintained at 35 C and slurry is agitated by a recirculation pump outside the digester, thus avoiding formation of a permanent scum layer. Retention time is 30 days. Experimental installation: no use for the biogas is planned.
3. BAILLONVILLE: the digester is continuous load plug flow type: 20 m3 capacity, this flexible plastic unit is used for the mesophilic treatment of chicken droppings and consists of a semi-buried cylindrical pocket, the upper part of which actsas a storage tank. No agitation system. Biogas is used for heating.
4. GELUWE: steel completely mixed continuous load digester 90 m3 capacity. Used for slurry treatment from a pig farm (80 sows and 350 pigs for fattening). It consists of an insulated steel vertical, cylindrical conical tank operating at 35 C. An external pump draws off slurry to prevent crust formation in the cone section, reinjecting it into the upper part of the digester. The biogas provides electricity and hot water for the farm and farmhouse.
5. CORROY-LE-CHATEAU: plug-flow buried, elongated cylindrical methane digester made of supple polymeric material. Capacity 270 m3. Mixing occurs with 2 immerged centrifugal pumps.
It is sheltered in a building. The biogas is stored in the upper part of the methane digester. The digestion substrate is mainly pig manure coming from fattening pigs mixed with cattle manure originating from 100 cattle in a farm that has a major pollution problem.
6. OTEGEM: 34 m3 completely-mixed standing, metallic cylindrical methane digester well-insulated with rock wool. Mixing occurs with an immersed pump. The digestion substrate is rabbit manure, rendered liquid with water. The methane digester is semi -continuously loaded. Mean residence time averages 15 days or more.
7. HELECINE: plug-flow methane digester constructed in supple polymeric material as an elongated plastic bag working volume 300 m3. Mixing occurs through two immersed pumps. The digestion substrate is poultry manure from 63,000 boiler chickens. The manure is mixed with water and straw is discarded. The digestion effluent goes through a liquid-solid separator and the liquid portion is recycled.
8. LO-RENINGE: 300 m3 well-insulated, metallic standing cylindrical continuously loaded digester. Mixing occurs by liquid recirculation through an external pump.
9. BASSEVELDE: 140 m3 working volume plug-flow parallel piped continuously loaded once through methane digester. Mixing occurs through liquid and gasrecirculation.
