PV ELECTRIFICATION OF A DAIRY FARM IN THE APPENINE MOUNTAINS

Ziel

To demonstrate the use of PV power to maintain a dairy herd in the remote Appenines.
During the summer, cattle are typically taken to the pastures in the high Appenines for grazing. Today however this practice is becoming uneconomic and is being phased out. The aim of this project is to help revitalise the dairy industry in this moutainous area by allowing an increase in the number of cows grazing the land. This is achieved by reducing the milking time through the introduction of PV powered milking machines, and by installing a PV refrigerator to allow the preservation of milk.
The technical and economical results of the project can be evaluated as very positive.
For the refrigerator it has been found, that energy storage in form of cold water is better than energy storage in the batteries.
For a replication of the system, energy cost of 5.5 ECU/kWh have been estimated.
A total of 4 KWp of PV arrays is used for two applications.
1) For milking 50 head of cattle twice a day. Three 400 W milking machines are used.
2) For refrigerating the milk until it is collected. A 1000 l capacity, energy efficient milk cooler is installed.
Three 400 W, 48 V dc milking machines and an energy efficient 48 V dc refrigerator, with a capacity of 1000 l are used. The milk is stored at 5 deg. C.
The 4000 Wp pv array consists of 80 Siemens modules of type SM 55. A Tudor Spain Battery of 1180 Ah at 48 V is used.
The system is used during the summer months between April and October.
