PASSIVE AND LOW ENERGY HOUSING BLOCKS IN NORTHERN PORTUGAL

Objetivo

The project aims to demonstrate how passive solar technologies can be used to obtain energy efficient buildings that can be similar to conventional non-solar buildings, once some design approaches and construction techniques are taken into account.
The innovation is mainly the way that the passive solar features are incorporated as building components in order to guarantee better confort conditions and low energy consumption, not only in winter, but also in summer. In regions where summer climatic constraints are as severe or even more severe than those posed by winter, summer confort without air conditioning is a major concern, to avoid costs to the occupants and to reduce the load on the electric production network.

The project consists of the integration of passive solar features in 3 apartment blocks, each of 4 floors (16 apartments per block).
The local climatic data are:
- heating degree-days: 800 (base 15 deg. C);
- outdoor summer design temperature: 28 deg. C or 32 deg. C.
The first block has following characteristics:
- floor area: 1480 m2;
- total surface of skin: 2282 m2;
- direct gain apertures: 33 m2;
- sun space glazing: 142 m2;
- mass walls: 43 m2.
These direct gain and trombe wall will cover 25% of the energy needs.
The second block has a similar size:
- the window surface in south: 119 m2;
- north, east and west: 48 m.
The direct gain and trombe wall will cover 86% of the energy needs.
The third block has a similar size:
- the window surface in south: 119 m2;
- north, east and west : 48 m.
The direct gain and trombe wall will cove 86% of the energy needs.
The third block has a similar size :
- window surface in south : 153 m;
- other sides : 37 m2.
The direct gain will cover 78% of the energy needs.
The total heating loads are expected to be half of a traditional equivalent building due to improved insulation (about 75 MWh/year instead of 148 MWh). The solar contribution is estimated at about 20 MWh/year instead of 12 MWh/year for the traditional building.
These results in a total reduction of about 80 MWh per building per year.
