DEEP WATER SUBSEA SYSTEM SERVICING THROUGH THE SURFACE : A TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER

Objective

To transfer the technology for the control of the bottom end of a slender structure through positioning from the top, from the case of a cable-like structure for oceanographic research (established technology) to a riser-like structure (new application of proven technology) required for subsea servicing.
A control scheme for the riser re-entry problem through control from a surface vessel has been developed. The scheme is based on novel control methodology capable of handling systems with delays. In particular, the traditional Smith controller was combined with the LQG/LTR methodology to design a robust control system for the non-linear physical problem of riser dynamics, after this was linearized and reduced to a finite-dimensional problem using a novel identification verification methodology. Numerical results using the developed control scheme are very promising. The scheme has been successfully tested in laboratory conditions in collaboration with the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, U.S.A.
The project duration was two years. The main tasks carried out within the project were :
TASK 1 : Transfer of technology from oceanographic systems to subsea offshore systems.
This task will address the basic problem of technology transfer. Based on the WHOI/MIT technology available to the research team directly, the essential features of a system similar to the existing ocean search system will be developed, but with two basic differences : (a) the controlled structure is now a riser to guide to a submerged well, and (b) the operation consists of a search for a specific point (bottom well) and then an attachment phase.
TASK 2 : Preparation of the conditions for a subsequent full scale demonstration of the new application.
This task will address the formulation of a pilot or full-scale demonstration project to be accomplished in conjunction with an offshore company or operator in a subsequent project. The principal technological issues will be presented within a specific demonstration project selected after the completion of Task 1. Initial cooperation with one or more companies will be actively sough at this stage to prepare for the next project too.
