OPERATION OF AN SK30 GAS TURBINE GENERATING SET ON FUEL GAS FROM THE BRITISH GAS/LURGI SLAGGING GASIFIER

Ziel

To validate the benefits and feasibility of a 150 MWe coal gasification combined cycle power station employing the British Gas-Lurgi slagging gasifier and SK30 gas turbine. Particular attention to be paid to the adequacy of the gas clean-up plant, the gas turbine combustion concepts used, and the ability of the hot gas path components to withstand long term operation on slagger gas.
The generating set produced 27 MWe, with up to 24 MWe being exported from the Westfield site.L%
The SK30 generating set at Westfield operated for 1465 hours of which 1166 were on slagger gas. A total of 13200 MWhrs of power before the set was shut down upon completion of the gasifier programme.
In the early stages of this project it proved impossible to operate satisfactorily on both natural gas and slagger gas using a common combustion system. Subsequently different combustion systems were used for each gas. Operation of the SK30 on the sulphurous slagger gas was successfully demonstrated. Some sulphidation of the combustion chamber flare material was seen early in the trials but the application of a thermal barrier coating prevented further problems.
The overall site programme was extended somewhat beyond that originally planned, but all of the declared objectives were satisfactorily achieved.
The project involves installation of an SK30 gas turbine generating set at the Westfield Development Centre of British Gas Corporation, to operate on gasifier product gas which would otherwise be flared. The research and development to design and rig test a new burner system to be used in the SK-30 was undertaken by Rolls Royce. Novel control system features were also designed to run and change over, on alternate gases, including safety features associated with operation of the SK30 on hydrogen and carbon monoxide-rich gasifier gas. (A patent was taken for the novel fuel injectors).
Total costs are projected to be UKL 2.322 million (exclusive of Phase 1 and 2 which were wholly funded by Rolls Royce).
