FEASIBILITY STUDY ON PRODUCTION OF SYNTHESIS GAS IN A BLAST FURNACE

To study the transformations necessary to operate the classical blast furnace as a synthesis gas generator.
Coke consumption is to be reduced to the minimum and replaced by coal, gasified by oxygen. Desulphurisation of the gas is simultaneously achieved by adjusting the composition of the alcaline slag.L%
The feasibility study, started in April 1985, was completed in 1986.
Not one conventional blast furnace in the world has yet been converted and used to synthesyse gas production. Coal injection through the tuyeres has been studied with a view to reducing coke consumption in iron production. The basic technique is the same but the detailed operation of the blast furnace in the absence of iron ore has to be reexamined in connection with the necessary reduction to a minimum level, of the coke quantity. The synthesis gas production requries gasification with oxygen, and together, if necessary, with steam or other injections to cool down the flame temperature. Other injections at different levels of the blast furnace must also be examined in view of the optimalisation of the process. The synthesis gas production depends on the modified blast furnace capacity. For a 8 m diameter blast furnace and on a 360,000 T/y coal consumption basis, the gas production is equivalent
to 8. 44 1,000,000 GJ/y or 2 100,000 TOE/y. The main applications of blast furnace synthesis gas could be : 1. Coal gasification for electricity production by combined cycles 2. Chemical synthesis, in particular production of pure hydrogen for the heavy chemical industry. 3. The use as reducing agent.
The project consists of 4 phases:
1. Feasibility study (1 year)
2. Engineering (1 year)
3. Construction (1 year)
4. Testing, starting, operating and demonstration by continuous runs of sufficient long time (2 years).
