REPLACEMENT OF TWO OLD LOW HEAD HYDROPLANTS BY A NEW ONE WITH INCLINED AXIS S-TYPE TUBE TURBINE

Objectif

Project to replace two existing power plants by construction of a new one, using one single regulated S-tube turbine with inclined axis against the horizontal powerhouse floor to improve flood protection of the generator. Annual energy output = 6500000 kWh and the estimated payback is 5 years.
The first start-up of the plant and connection with ENEL network occurred on July 30th, 1990; in August 8th the plant was put into regular commission.
The plant is operating with no particular anomaly, except for some negligible events which would normally be expected to occure during the running-in period of a plant. The energy production values, as well as the hours of operation since its start-up, prove the absence of important deficiencies and confirm the expected productivity level.
The trouble-free operation of the plant proves the validity of the adopted solutions.
No wear measuring on the bearings has been carried out; we have however checked the flow values in the lubricating system of the bearing. One year after start-up these values have not changed. This means that possible wear of the bearing is quite negligible.
The adopted solutions have then to be suitable, as the operating results are positive up to now.
On the basis of the total cost of investment, that amounts to 4.7 billiards Italian Lire, the total management expenses, that amounts to 91 millions Italian Lire, the savings are equal to 39.5 Ital. Lire/kWh and the final result, after deducting the financial support, is equal to an IRR = 15.9%.
A Stegona monography has been presented during a meeting held in Lisbon in Spring 1992.
The project concerns the use of a tubular axial turbine fitted with an innovative water feeding system with inclined axis, allowing the installation of all electric equipment above the water level, as well as limited excavation, due to a special shape of the discharge elbow as compared with raditional vertical turbines.
This type of turbine in the result of research carried out by Riva Hydroart on behalf of CNR (National Research Committee), which allowed development of several feasible configurations to be applied to axial tubular turbines.
The project also concerns the water lubrication of the bearing instead of the traditional oil or grease lubrication, so to avoid water pollution due to lubricant leakage from the bearing.
Just the adoption of inclined axis has required particular care in the shaft bearing lubrication: an expensive lubrication system with pumps, filters, cyclon and instrumentation has been installed. Unforeseen event, during the execution phase (sheet-piling and penstock laying), and inflaction caused a cost increase of energy produced up to the final value of 60.5 Italian Lire/kWh.
