UPDATING AND REFURBISHMENT OF GLAFKOS HES

Obiettivo

The main objective relevant to the project are :
- to demonstrate the benefit of modernised small Hydros in general.
- to make automatic the operation of an old existing unit.
- to demonstrate the possibility of combined operation of generating units of different conception (old Pelton, new Francis).
- to demonstrate the possibilities of new standardised equipment for above purposes, as well as for an as much as possible development of the existing hydroelectric potential.
Innovative aspects :
- Automation of an old unit, together with remote control of a station equipped with an old fashioned unit and a modern one.
- Installation, for the first time in Greece, of a modern standardised Francis-type turbine, in an existing power station without any substantial intervention to the existing civil works infrastructure.
Energy saving of the production : 4,2 GWh/yr.

The Project consists of :
a. The renovation of the existing old unit, constructed in 1936, consisting of two Pelton wheels with four jets simultaneously operated and one synchronous generator of 2000 kVA at 500 min-1. b. Installation of a new unit equipped with Francis type turbine of ca. 2,1 MW, 1000 min-1 and synchronous generator for complete exploitation of the existing potential.
(For the new unit : Max. Net Head : 156 m
Max. Discharge : 1,7 m3/s
Production of energy : 4,2 GWh/a.)
c. Installation of a complete automation system of modern technology for the entire project which will be also remotely controlled.
Innovatory aspects of the technique, process or product :
Investigating how the new equipment and old one can cooperate; demonstrating the automatic and remotely controlled operation of the entire project; installing of standardised modern equipment. The project concerns installation of additional equipment in an existing power plant. It will serve as a pilot plant for applying automation and remote control to other existing hydroelectric power plants in Greece; it will also furnish a good expereince in the field of small standardised Francis type units. Iy should be noted that the development of small hydros in Greece is just beginning, the respective exploitable potential totalling more than 1500 GWh per annum.
Cost of energy (additional) generated by the Project (in constant prices of the end of 1990); - Total cost entering the calculations : Drs 1.045.374.000
- Interest rate : 10 per cent.
- Depreciation time : 25 years for equipment and 50 years for civil works.
- Annual expenses : Drs 2.560.000
- Additional annual savings : Drs 70.000.000 (due to personnel reduction)
Therefore, unit cost of energy: 17 Drs/kWh.
During the testing and measurement phase extensive measurements and tests were carried out in order to observe the overall station performance under all operating conditions, before transferrnd testswill be carried out in order to observe the overall station performance under all operating conditions, before transferring the operation from manned to unmanned.
