Objective The Dehesa and Montado terms are used to describe the rangelands and associated land-use systems characteristic of West and Southwest Spain and Alentejo in Portugal in areas where soils are poor and summer drought particularly acute. In the most strict sense of the terms, referring to an agrosilvo pastoral system which combines the management of open oakwoodland for acorns, cork, fuelwood, charcoal, etc., with the grazing of livestock and game and the periodic cultivation of marginal crops, usually cereals : it is t his understanding of the terms that is of interest here. The general aim involves the analysis of the technical and economic conditions of resource management in the dehesa and montado systems. An additional aim of this project is to analyze the private and public economic and environmental management of both the dehesa and montado systems, and identify market and intervention failures in the said systems. Dehesa and Montado are terms used to describe the rangelands and associated land use systems characteristic of the west and southwest of Spain and Alentejo in Portugal where soils are poor and summer drought is particularly acute. A technical and economic analysis of resource management in the dehesa and montado systems is proposed. Survey information collect to date covers land use and vegetation, the herbage grazed by livestock, the physical yields of agriculture including livestock, hunting and forestry. Information has also been collected on the infrastructures of the collaborating farms with indices of the mechanization employed. The work programme consists on periodic and systematic collecting of information in the farms according to the requirements of methodologies and techniques of micro- economic analysis and of calculus of the physical productivities of main resources involved in the dehesa and montado sample (more than 16 farms and 20 000 ha in the researched sample). The methodology of the micro-economic analysis will be based in the European System of Integrated Economic Accounts (SEC), the EC's Agricultural Accounting Information Network and the //PCJ working paper "Economic and Environmental Agricultural Accounts System" (CSIC: 1991).
