LIGHT-WEIGHT ELECTRICALLY POWERED COMMERCIAL VEHICLES

Ziel

Production of a fleet of 13 light commercial vehicles based on the existing PEUGEOT 205 electrically powered prototype vehicle. The major innovative feature is the propulsion system which includes an energy storage accumulator (using Ni-Fe batteries) located at the front of the vehicle. The aim is :
- to demonstrate that such vehicles meet range of utilisation requirements and are economically viable in actual operational systems;
- to demonstrate that the electrically vehicle offers significant advantages over the conventional combustion engine type in terms of energy consumption and environment protection (emissions, noise).
With the 13 vehicles it is expected to achieve an overall energy saving of
0.9 TOE/year (5% of standard vehicle fuel consumption) and an energy substitution of 16.6 TOE/year.

The fleet of 13 vehicles includes 11 "company car" types (Peugeot 205) and 2 delivery van types (Citroen C15).
The propulsion elements and their arrangement are identifical on both types of vehicle. The Citroen C15, however, is equipped with an additional 100 kg accumulator set consisting of 4 single-block batteries fitted sideways behind the door pillars. The under bonnet equipment layout is the same on both, and includes :
- Transverse electric motor propulsion set. Mechanical transmission to the driving axle is provided by an epicyclic gear system.
- Ni-Fe batteries installed in 2 compartments situated at 2 different levels and their combined liquid and radiant cooling system.
- An electronic unit consisting of motor control (for tracting and braking), battery, charger, dc-dc converter and power meter.
The vehicles are designed for an autonomy of more than 100km/day in town traffic at full load. Power consumption is specified to be about :
- 0.242 kWh/km for the Peugeot 205
- 0.285 kWh for the Citroen C15
The vehicles will be tested at 2 complementary sites :
- one located at the seaside, under conditions of mild ambient temperatures and highly corrosive atmosphere (La Rochelle, France).
- the other is northern urban districts (Brussels and Antwerp, Belgium).
These tests will provide information required to draw up the economic balance sheet of this type of vehicle, to evaluate its market potential and determine the optimum size of the drive system elements according to the differrent types of utilisation.
This will entail data acquisition of a number of relevant parameters such as : type of journey, daily travel time, electricity consumption, maintenance time, travel speed, climatic conditions, travel distances...
Based on the purchase price of a standard combustion engine vehicle (37,000 FF) plus accumulator cpsts (18,000 FF), the payback time for a vehicle driven a distance of 20,000 km/year is estimated at 3.5 years.
