DECENTRALIZED COGENERATION

Objective

Installation and operation of an electricity/heat cogeneration system in various parts of the municipal territory of the town Vicenza. The system consists of a number of TOTEM (Total Energy Modules) groups installed nearby appropriate civil users to supply them with heat, produced in cogeneration, for heating purposes. The Totems work in parallel to the existing conventional heat generators. The cogenerated electricity is fed into the low tension grid of the local corporation A.I.M. It is expected to achieve with the proposed system an energy saving of 277 TOE/y.
Problems were experienced with the high levels of acoustic noise eminating from the flues. It was found that a flue constructed of heavy bricks with uneven corrugated inside walls brought the noise level down to acceptable limits. This was satisfactory with one or two totems connected to a smoke duct, but if a third was added this resulted in a considerable increase in noise. It was therefore concluded that a maximum of two totems can be connected to one smoke duct.
Another, lesser, problem was the condensate produced when flue temperatures were less than 100 Deg.C. It is advisable to provide the flue with a device for collecting and draining the condensate to prevent damage to the flue.
The project "Decentralized congeneration" will be carried out by the local corporation A.I.M. which administrates besides other public services the natural gas and electricity distribution within the province of Vicenza.
The project comprises the installation of in total 16 totems in 5 cogeneration stations nearby important heat users like large condominiums, schools and other public consumers.
The totems operate in parallel to the existing heat generating systems. The cogenerated electricity is fed into the low tension grid of A.I.M. The heat produced is used for room space heating and sanitary hot water production.
The totem modules are connected with a central monitoring system which checks constantly their operation conditions.
Each totem has a total power of 54 KW which is sub-divided in 15KWE and 25 KWTH.It consumes 5.7 M3/H methane. The average annual operating time per totem amounts to 5625 H and thus for 16 totems to 90000H.
This decentralized cogeneration system is expected to save 277 TOE/Y compared to conventional systems in the separate productions of thermal and electric energy.
