Objetivo A 6 KW wind turbine has been constructed by Windsol and installed at Vlachia (North Evia) in order to provide electricity to an isolated settlement not connected to the national grid. The main source of energy is wind supported by diesel in cases of long windless periods, using also battery storage. The estimated annual yield is 10 000 KWh.Project abandoned due to technical failure.A 3-bladed 6 KW horizontal axis wind turbine made by Windsol with a rotordiameter of 6,2 m has been installed at Vlachia-North Evia and is generating electricity for the needs of a settlement in an isolated area not connected to the public grid. A battery storage and a 6 KW diesel generator are also used in order to cover the electricity needs during windless periods and thus the system is autonomous. The excess energy, if any, will be used for water heating.The upwind rotor drives two separate electric generators; a 1,5 KW/24 VDC for battery charging and a 5 KW/220 VAC for direct supply. The machine reaches its nominal output at windspeed of 10 m/s and is shut off automatically at 25 m/s. The generators are placed on a 15 m lattice steel tower. The batteries are standard lead acid type made by HAGO and have a total capacity of 1000 Ah. When batteries are discharged to 80% then the diesel generator covers the demand and recharges the batteries. A static DC/AC inverter with 2,5 KWrated capacity is used to power AC loads requiring constant voltage and frequency, mainly when there is no wind blowing. The estimated annual yield is 10 000 KWh. When the system is mass produced the price will drop to 1/3 and the payback will be then about 10 years.
