PARAFIL ROPE DEEPWATER MOORING STUDY

Cel

The aim of the project is to prove the feasibility of 'Parafil' ropes for deepwater moorings both for tension leg free floating structures; guyed structures; and semi-submersible facilities.
Parafil type A, F and G are suitable for mooring oil field structures. The two first are most suited to catenary systems and the last is better for vertically tethered systems. For catenary systems, Parafil is best used for long term installations than for exploration vessels due to cost and complexity of handling operations. As displacement increases, the mooring element costs for vertical Parafil G system becomes progressively more expensive than for conventional steel tubular solution. Parafil should be design on a stiffness basis rather than a strength basis.
A termination geometry was generated for 60 tonnes testing.
A termination suitable for 3000 T is to be further tested. From the tests, it appears that safety factors might be lower than recommended by DNV. Extensive tests have been carried out which showed the following results :
- creep failure is not the dominant failure made
- tension bending showed that significant failure occured at the point when the deflection was applied but not at the termination
- shave bending provide that handling parameters can be reduced considerably.
"Parafil" is a parallel laid rope with high axial stiffness and lightweight. The project will identify suitable structures and analyse the behaviour of mooring systems for them made of "Parafil". Methods of installing, maintaining and monitoring the moorings will be investigated properties of the material, methods of on-site manufacture and transportation will be defined.
