IMPROVING THE EFFICIENCY AND ECONOMICS OF AN AUTONOMOUS WIND POWER SYSTEM FOR A BIRD OBSERVATION ON ORKNEY

Objective

To demonstrate the operation and efficiency of a 10 kW WT based autonomous power system.
Innovation lies on the new WT type and the proposed total energy strategy for stand-alone system.

The AEROWATT 10 kW WT is proposed in order to reduce costs and improve cost effectiveness of such installations. Modifications proposed concern the WT foundations and the load management system able to supply heat and electricity involving battery storage. The wind turbine is made by VERGNET (FR), type AEROWATT 10 kW, downwind with simple blade pitch control system. It uses earth-angor foundations and has an asynchronous 10 kW generator with 7,5 m rotor diameter. The produced electricity will be directly stored in low voltage batteries, from where, using proper inverters, d.c and a.c circuits will be supplied. The total annual yield is estimated at 35,000 kWh.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
