A HYBRID WIND TURBINE/BIOGAS SYSTEM FOR MAXIMISING THE ENERGY AUTONOMY OF SEWAGE TREATMENT PLANTS

Objectif

To install a 500 kW wind turbine in order to provide the maximum possible energy autonomy to a sewage treatment plant. To simulate the theoretical direct autonomy.
Innovatory aspects : The combination of wind energy and biogas production for a sewage treatment plant of this size.

The Municipal Company for Water and Sanitation of Chania (DEYAX) aiming at minimizing the operational costs of the sewage treatment plant of the city is going to utilize the biogas produced on-site as well as the wind potential of the broad area, in order to meet its energy needs. Biogas will be produced from the sludge by anaerobic digestion in generation beds.
The total required electrical energy of full operation is estimated at 2,000,000 kWh annually. The biogas will produce 800,000 kWh, while the wind energy should cover the rest. Intend to this, it has been decided the installation of wind turbine (WT) in the most appropriate site for wind energy utilization purposes near the plant. The WT is going to be a newly designed 500 kW nominal power Renk Tacke machine, which incorporates a three-bladed, stall controlled upwind rotor, coupled to a generator. Due to the unsufficient meteorological conditions on-site the sewage plant, the WT will not be directly connected to the plant, but it will be installed in connection to the PPC grid, thus supplying the plant by that grid.
Regarding the potential (direct) energy autonomy of the treatment plant, a theoretical energy management is to be computed on the basis of its practical operation which will be simulated to that end.
The total of the kWh produced by the wind turbine is estimated to 4,3 DRS, figure which should be compared to the 24 DRS which is the real cost per unit of energy generated by the PPC grid.
This results in a payback time of approximately 9 years.
