DEVELOPMENT OF AN INTEGRATED PIPELINE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

Objective

The objective of the present project is to develop a multiple purpose submarine pipeline and riser data base management system containing a large variety of pipeline and riser related data and a multitude of utility programs. The major purpose of the system is to provide the pipeline operator with an all-inclusive information base and a range of analysis tools for his current pipeline integrety evaluations, and inspection/maintenance planning. Project innovative elements include:
- integration of a large family of databases
- wide range of new analyses methods
- relational database methodology
- high degree of software portability
- posibility for offshore application on survey vessel.
The project has resulted in a highly flexible and portable database management system suitable for installation in a large variety of hardware/software environments.
The successful completion of the IPMS project has proven that it is viable to develop an I,M&R information system based on the philosophies outlined in 3. 2. The usefulness of the system and the benefits from the integrated approach can however of course only be established through using the system in the operating environment for which it is intended. Several years of experience will be needed before all aspects may be cleared up, and adjustments and improvements will most certainly be needed on a number of points
.
The next step will include the integration of "expert system" - modules or "decision - support" modules. In the case of the IPMS it would be an obvious future development to include a "decision support" module for explicitly assisting the operator in inspection planning. This module would e. g.
- identifycritical areas to be inspected according to user defined criteria
- identify other areas to be inspected according to a fixed inspection programme
- propose inspection methodology (vessel, type of survey, sensors, etc,) on basis of experience stored from earlier surveys
- set-up inspection schedule
- evaluate economical aspects.
The IPMS has been divided into 12 modules to enhance flexibility, viz:
1. Network Modelling
Description of physical configuration of the pipeline and riser system.
2. Pipeline Design
Storage of all data generated during pipeline design.
3. Riser Design
storage of riser design data.
4. Pipeline and Riser Construction
Data from the construction phase.
5. Inspection Characteristics
Storage of information related to the execution of the individuel inspection contracts.
6. Pipeline Inspection
Storage and analyses of data gathered during pipeline inspection
.
7. Position Correction Tables
Compensation of positioning Inaccuracies
8. Riser Inspection
Storage and analyses of data gathered during riser inspection
9. Pipeline End Manifold
Storage and maintenance of data related to a PLEM.
10. Seabed General
Data related to seabed in the vicinity of the pipeline route.
11. Environment
Storage of relevant hydrographic data.
12. External Records
References to external records.
the project development is divided into seven phases, viz;
a) System Analyses and Definition
b) System design
c) Programming
d) System Documentation
e) Implementation and Testing
f) Installation and Commissioning
g) Training
