DEEP SEA CONNECTING TECHNIQUES AND PIPELINES

Objective

The objectives of the project were first to examine the possibilities of the RAT method (end-connection of a section of towed-up pipeline) under tension, on the surface, and then to study the J-configuration laying method, so as develop a subsea mechanical connector for pipelines and a method of repairing pipelines under water.

Optimization of the RAT method
The study showed that the field of application of this method, tested within the framework of contract 18/75, was in actual fact limited to the development of the satellite fields of the major oil-producing fields.
J-configuration laying method.
Major general research on the method, the dynamic behaviour of the pipe during laying and the connection techniques, were followed by tests intented to prove the feasibility of components (joints, ramps...) or welding system. This led to the choice of a connection by electron-beam welding and the drafting of preliminary project of a welding machine. The work was continued under contract 09.19/80.
Pipeline repair method
General study of the problems set by repairing pipelines has revealed the importance of careful preparation of the end, carried out automatically in great depths of water. Feasibility studies have proved that the tools were capable of operating underwater, and a preliminary project of a repairsystem was developed.
The work was contined under contract 09.19/79.
Repair with mechanical connectors
The studies and tests carried out in this area can only be considered as an approach to mechanical connection. They have demonstrated the feasibility of mechanical connection by means of an air-tight metal-to-metal seal against a formed collar. The work was continued under contract 10.21/79.
