DRILLING AUTOMATION (PART 2)

Cel

The final purpose of this project is the full automation of the drilling operation. The aim of Part 2 is to obtain a complete automation of screwing and racking devices in the derrick.
These devices have already been automated individually within the scope of project TH 02024/84 Drilling automation Part 1. The last phase of this project is to complete automation of the power swivel previously developed within part 1 thanks to the handling equipment depending directly on the power swivel allowing overdrill and automatic connection and disconnection operations at any height inside the derrick. The new design of this second generation Power Swivel handling equipment is modular, so future improvements could be made separately for each module and also the drilling process will not be stopped because of troubles of only one module.
Phase 1 - Start-up and manual operating tests completed.
Phase 2 - Automation intended for the synchronization of machines have been supplied and assembled on the GELOS site in a pressurized panel. Synchronization softwares have been written, tested in laboratories and at real scale.
Phase 3 - Software intended for the comprehension of PSO commands by the BLM machines has been written and tested.
Phase 4 - After manual start-up of racking machine, all the BLM machines will be ready for connection to the PSO computer for the handling integrated robotisation.
Phase 5 - Completed.
1. Improve the automation of hooking systems namely by increasing the handling capacity of the lower racking machine for the triples up to 9 tons so to handle the drill collars.
2. Realise a single automation linking the following operations :
- screwing-unscrewing (BIL-K)
- transfer of BIL-K to bottom racking
- racking on lower position
- racking upper position.
3. Improve handling beyond the drilling floor area to replace pneumatic wirelines and winches presently used by safer systems based on jacks, winches and robots.
4. Manufacture of an actuator for the brake band
5. Realisation of power swivel automation equipment, namely : - connection module (or tool joint breaker): this module is able to make the connection between the power swivel and the drill stem at any height inside the derrick, and also to dismantle or to connect lower parts of the power swivel shaft for easy maintenance (i. e. : Kelly cocks, Saver sub).
- handling module : this module improves handling operationsduring tripping phases by tilting, to convenient position, the elevator which catches the pipe standing out the racking board,
- threading compensation module : this module avoids the damage of the tool joint thread during connection of power swivel to drill stem
.
Without this module the total weight of the power swivel (19 tons) should be supported by the power swivel saver sub pin threads and by the upper tool joint box threads of the drill stem.
