Obiettivo To provide the offshore exploration industry with a navigation system capable of precise positioning suitable for all types of exploration activities at ranges not currently available from the present generation of land based navigation systems. The results proved that the new pulse 8 system now provided accuracies of +/- 07.5 metres in areas of good coverage and +/- 15 metres in fringe areas. To summarise then the New Pulse 8 system is now 50% more accurate than the old system. The project concerned itself with improving the accuracy of the Racal Pulse 8 system. The programme for improvement was carried out over an leven month period in five phases.Phase I Market Study : A detailed evaluation of the market and the needs of the exploration industry was undertaken. This confirmed that Pulse 8 was the only land based system which could be improved to provide the positioning accuracies and at the ranges required by the industry.Phase II Simulation, Monitoring, Assessment : The accuracy of the Pulse 8 system was limited by a combination of synchronous and cross-rate interference, skywave comtamination at long ranges, low signal to noise rates and monitor control. New techniques such as pseudo random pulse position modulations, dual cycle tracking and transmission of differential correction data were investigated, bench simulated, monitored and assessed. The results proved that the accuracy of the system could be improved by a degree that would meet the targets set.Phase III Prototype Receiver : A new pulse 8 receiver was developed incorporating dual cycle tracking and the reception of differential correction data.Phase IV Transmitter Modifications : The Pulse 8 transmitters were modified to allow for Automatic pattern control and a new computer controlled monitoring system was designed and installed.FIELD TRIALSLengthy field trials were undertaken and differential GPS, Hyperfix and Microfix positioning systems were used for accuracy comparisons.
