Objectif The aim of this project is to show the advantages of using on a large scale, solar air collectors coupled with a latent heat storage system and heat pump for the space heating of a commercial building. Expected energy savings amount to 4 TOE/yr with a corresponding payback of 23 years.A modern 3 storey, 1 500 m2 building has been constructed to house the URSSAF offices. The design has exploited modern bioclimatic architecture and integrated components which will reduce the use of conventional heating fuels to a minimum.The building itself is round; the West-North East facade contains a relatively small glazed surface whilst the West-South East facade supports 253 m2 of air collectors. Central wells covered by a glass dome descend from the roof to the ground floor thereby maximising use of natural light and creating a greenhouse effect in the Winter. Cooling is assured during Summer months by decorative water pools on the ground floor, natural air circulation in the central wells and shading over the glass dome.The solar installation is composed of two circuits (primary and distribution) separated by a plate heat exchanger. The primary circuit contains the air collectors, latent heat store, the heat exchanger and the evaporator of a 34 Kw heat exchanger. The distribution circuit contains a fresh air-recycled air mixer, the heat exchanger, an air-water exchanger linked with the heat pump's condensor and an electric auxiliary heater. Temperature may be controlled by storing or discharging the heat storage system, which may be discharged to lower temperatures than would otherwise be the case, due to the use of the heat pump. The same heat pump is used for cooling in Summer.Apart from the buildings innovative design, the combination of the above components is novel.
