SOLAR ENERGY FOR INDUSTRIAL DRYING

Objectif

The aim of the project is to develop a technology for utilizing solar energy for drying purposes, by using air collector for heating or preheating of the drying air. The project is realized at 4 different sites.

The project concerns the drying of wood, and is realized at 4 different sites with slightly different system designs.
Hereafter, each of the systems is described :
1st project : Company Kilocal, Site Mesnil-l'Eglise:
Product to dry : sawings and shavings
Quantity dryed per year : 300 tons
Period : all the year
Product humidity : initial 60%
- final 10%
The dimensions of the drier permits the utilization of 400 m2 of solar collectors. The system is composed of two batteries of collectors placed on a south 45 deg. inclinated surface. These batteries feeds four groups of ventilators-heat exchanger of 9000 m3/h each one. These distributes the air at one blow-grill placed under the drying mass.
Annual energetic consumption (working temperature 30 deg.C) :
- without solar installation : 653000 kWh;
- with solar installation : 401000 kWh;
Solar gain : 252000 kWh (38.5%).
2nd project : Company Leon Dubois, site Trazegnies
Product to dry : oak-planks (thickness 50 mm)
Quantity dryed per year : 432 m3
Period : all the year
A solar collector battery (150 m2) is used for preheating the exchanger-air and to heat the drying-box. The latter is, in any case, equiped by a 93 kW exchanger connected with the general energy supply of the Company.
The solar battery is divided in two parts. One part cover the South vertical wall, the other part covers the South side of the roof (30 deg. inclination).
A part of the drying-air, in closed circulation in the drying-box is taken at the lower side of vertical collectors and runs along all the solar batteries before being injected in front of the inernal exchanger.
This exchanger air, which is preheated by the collectors, replaces the satured air in the drying-box.
Annual energetic consumption :
- without solar installation : 265000 kWh;
- with solar installation : 183200 kWh;
Solar gain : 82000 kWh (31%).
3rd project : Company Dumoulin, Site Waremme
Product : Lucerne on bunches
Quantity dried per year : 170 tons
Period : June-September
Product humidity : initial 50%
- final 15%
The system consists of a solar over roof upon the existing roof covering. The Lucerne is dryed by air heated at 20/30 deg.C. The heating of the air is made by a battery of 120 m2 of uncovered collectors (inclination 30 deg).
The flow is pushed by a fan through a plenum-system placed under the product to dry and passes through the drying product. During rain periods, the system utilizes an oil burner.
Annual energetic consumption :
- without solar installation : 50400 kWh;
- with solar inst. : 26400 kWh; Solar gain : 24000 kWh (47.6%). 4th project : Company Gerrekens, Site Polombieres Product : hay (at cock)
