PV POWERED PUMPING IN A SLAUGHTER HOUSE IN CORSICA (ZIGLIARA)

Cel

To demonstrate an application of PV pumping. A 3.84 kWp array and inverter powers a submersible centrifugal ac pump to transfer water to a 20 m3 storage tank for watering cattle and washing operations in a slaughterhouse in the Zigliara district of Corsica.
The pump has an output of 20 m3/day at an 80 m head.
The frequency of the inverter varies with irradiance to ensure the maximum transfer of power under all conditions.
The project is part of a government sponsored programme of rural electrification by PV in Corsica.
Operation was very satisfactory after mounting a non-return valve in the water pipe. The user appreciates mainly the reliability of the water supply and the absence of maintenance work. No repairs of the pv part were necessary.
The cost of electricity is 8.7 FF/kWh and the payback time is 11 years.
Some dozens of these units are now in operation, mainly in Africa. Smaller units (of 1.5 kWp) would be cheaper to fabricate and easier to sell.
An ambitious programme has been set up by AFME and FRME to promote the use of renewable energies in Corsica. This project to provide water to a slaughter house by using a PV powered pump forms part of the programme. Water will be pumped from a river to a 20 m3 storage tank, 80 m above the river.
The 3,84 Wp PV array consists of 96 Photowatt BPX 47-400 monocrystalline modules, arranged in 12 parallel strings of 8 modules in series. The array is connected to a 4 kVA variable frequency inverter which includes a maximum power point tracker and has a 3 phase output. The output frequency of the inverter varies from 6-60 Hz, with an output voltage at 50 Hz of 380 V. The ratio of the inverter output voltage to frequency is kept constant to ensure that the motor works at maximum efficiency of 90-95%.
The pump is a 3 phase, 4" diameter submersible, centrifugal pump, of type RA 20 Leroy-Somer.
The system uses no battery, relying on the storage of water in the tank. Any excess water producedin the summer will be used for irrigation.
The cost of this project over 10 years is comparable to the cost of a diesel generator.
